help figuring out the year of my zeiss ikoflex!
« on: April 06, 2012, 02:06:31 AM »
my mom passed and i received boxes of my schoolstuff, and in them was the old zeiss ikoflex box camara I purchased at goodwill in highschool and used all through to collage in my photography classes. its in wonderfull shape and I cant wait to start using again. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out when it was made. the serial number on the bottom is h80263 wich has pointed me to around 1938, but i removed the zeiss lens and the serial number inscribed on it was 7557687, wich points me to 1927. it has a gold printed zeiss logo, novar-anastigmat f7.5 bottom lens and teronar-anastigmat top lens. the problem is it just looks to modern to be as old as the numbers point to. any ideas? thanks

It looks to me like an Ikoflex Ia (model code: 854/16). If that's correct, then it was most probably made between about 1952 and 1956. Maybe the factory was still using up old camera bodies that had been manufactured before World War 2, but that were then shelved, if the factory was converted to making military equipment in the war years. If the serial number is definitely pre-war, that might possibly explain it. As for the lens... maybe the original one got damaged and a previous owner replaced it with a lens from an older model (which is a possibility, because I believe the lenses can be removed by unscrewing them).

No, it doesn't match the configuration of the Ikoflex Ia.  It looks more like an Ikoflex I made from 1939 to 1951, which was originally designated Ikoflex II between 1936 and 1939.  I didn't check the lens serial numbers, but Zeiss is known to have stockpiled lenses for years before using them, so it's not impossible that they were made much earlier.
